Modified Immunosuppression Allows Stem Cell Grafting In Elderly Patients

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - By using postgraft immunosuppression instead of highly toxic pretransplant conditioning, researchers in the United States say that elderly patients with hematological malignancies can successfully undergo stem cell transplantation.

"Toxicities have limited the use of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) to younger, medically fit patients," explained Peter A. McSweeney and colleagues at the University of Colorado and other institutions.
