Radiation-Induced Interleukin-7 Deficiency Impairs T-Cell Recovery

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Reduced production of the growth factor interleukin-7 may be responsible for impaired thymopoiesis after bone marrow transplantation, according to researchers in the United States.

"Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is the major thymopoietic cytokine," explained Kenneth Weinberg and colleagues at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. "Injections of IL-7 after murine bone marrow transplantation (BMT) correct defects in thymic differentiation," including low thymic cell counts and impaired maturation and proliferation.
