New Initiative Aims To Expand Living Donor Usage

Fujisawa unveiled a major international initiative on living donor kidney transplantation.

The initiative began with a day-long symposium that launched the 10th Congress of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT), held this year (2001) in Lisbon, Portugal.

The chronic shortage of organ donors is a major problem in transplantation medicine. Every year many patients die while on the transplant waiting list, a problem that is worsening year by year. Kidney disease is becoming much more common, and remarkable successes in transplantation continue to fuel increasing demand, far exceeding growth in the number of cadaveric (i.e., deceased)...
