HLA-B27 Carriers Have Elevated Risk

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Patients whose blood cells express HLA-B27 have a heightened risk of developing hematological malignancies, according to researchers in Hong Kong.

"Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 carriers are predisposed to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases," particularly a painful and debilitating spinal inflammation known as ankylosing spondylitis (AS), explained Dr. W.Y. Au and colleagues at Queen Mary Hospital.

Au and coauthors showed that HLA-B27 carriers were also more likely to suffer from leukemia or lymphoma.
