Breast Cancer Resistance Protein Can Confer Drug Resistance

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in Europe have shown that a protein known to confer resistance to multiple anticancer drugs is often expressed by acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells.

"Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) is a recently described member of the ATP binding cassette transporter superfamily," explained Jean M. Sargent and colleagues at Pembury Hospital in Kent, U.K., and the Vrije University Medical Centre and the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. "It has been shown to confer resistance to mitoxantrone, topotecan, doxorubicin and daunorubicin in human tumor cell lines."
