Recombinant Hemoglobin Safe For Anesthetized Patients

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Recombinant human hemoglobin (rHb1.1) appears to be safe for use as a surgical blood substitute, researchers in the United States report.

Dr. John K. Hayes and colleagues at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville and the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City evaluated the safety profile of rHb1.1 in anesthetized patients.

Although rHb1.1 administration triggered some unexplained symptoms, their clinical relevance seems to be minimal, they said.
