Engineered Blood Outgrowth Endothelial Cells Show Promise

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Genetically modified blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs) may provide therapeutic benefit to hemophiliacs, according to researchers in the United States.

Yi Lin and colleagues at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and Emory University's Winship Cancer Center in Atlanta evaluated the safety and efficacy of such therapy in animals. The results of their study were published in the January 15, 2002 edition of the journal Blood.

Engineered BOACs successfully delivered therapeutic levels of a coagulation factor to mice, Lin and coauthors reported.
