Antiviral Drugs Reduce Herpesvirus 6 Replication

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in the United States say that antiviral therapy may help protect stem cell graft recipients from herpesvirus-6-based disorders.

"Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) appears to cause central nervous system (CNS) syndromes, especially in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients," according to Danielle M. Zerr and colleagues at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

Ganciclovir and other antiviral agents reduced HHV-6 replication in stem cell recipients although further studies are needed to determine the clinical relevance of these reductions,...
