Modified partial thromboplastin time test can measure low factor VIII levels

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - A modified version of the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) clotting assay can be used to measure extremely low levels of factor VIII (FVIII:C) activity, researchers report.

"The lower detection limit of the conventional one-stage aPTT based clotting assay for determining FVIII:C levels is generally 1.0-2.0 IU/dl," explained Midori Shima and colleagues at Nara Medical University in Kashihara, Japan and Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. "Consequently, it has been impossible to study the clinical significance of levels of FVIII:C less than 1.0 IU/dl."
