Cytomegalovirus exposure ennervates dendritic cells

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection has a profound effect on human immune function, researchers in the United Kingdom report.

"Dendritic cells (DCs) play a pivotal role in the generation of virus-specific cytotoxic T-cell responses, but some viruses can render DCs inefficient in stimulating T cells," according to Dr. Magdalena Moutaftsi and colleagues at the University of Wales in Cardiff and the Imperial College School of Medicine in London.

Exposure to human CMV (HCMV) prevents virus-specific DCs from signaling for cytotoxic activity, short circuiting the immune response to infection, Moutaftsi and coauthors...
