Multiple MHC-mismatched cord blood infusions hasten engraftment

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Multiple cord blood infusions from MHC-disparate donors may improve outcomes for hematopoietic stem cell recipients, researchers in North Carolina report.

"Significant delays in engraftment and lymphoid recovery are the 2 major challenges in cord blood transplantation," according to Dr. Benny Chen and colleagues working with the Duke University Medical Center's Bone Marrow Transplantation Program. "The cause for this delay is presumed to be the low numbers of hematopoietic precursors found in one unit of cord blood."
