Higher filgrastim doses increase stem cell yield, toxicity risk

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - High doses of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) provide more efficient mobilization of stem cells for transplantation, but can increase patient risk as well, researchers in Germany find.

Dr. Nicolaus Kroeger and colleagues at the University of Hamburg compared the benefits and drawbacks of two doses of recombinant G-CSF, or filgrastim, for hematopoietic stem cell donors.

Higher filgrastim doses produced higher stem cell yields but increased the severity of G-CSF-associated side effects as well, Kroeger and coauthors found.
