Delicate balancing act needed when using gene therapy to treat limb ischemia

by Sonia Nichols, senior medical writer - Though studies have shown gene therapy incorporating genetic coding for angiogenic growth factors can be effective for treating critical limb ischemia, there exists a fine balance between just enough and too much therapy, scientists are now saying.

In fact, when that balance is upset, the risk for complications and limb loss is high, according to Ichiro Masaki and colleagues, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.
