Stem cell transplantation feasible after arsenic trioxide therapy

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is feasible for acute promyelocytic leukemia patients treated with arsenic trioxide, researchers in Italy report.

"Arsenic trioxide (ATO) has been reported to be a safe and effective treatment for relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL)," explained Dr. Franco Leoni and colleagues working at the Policlinico di Careggi in Florence.

Stem cell transplants can help keep APL patients successfully treated with ATO in remission, Leoni and coauthors found.
