U.K. government: Clearer rules, consent needed for retention of organs, tissue

The U.K. government launched a major review of the future law on the retention and use of human organs and tissue. Human Bodies, Human Choices was published for consultation in England and Wales.

The consultation report is part of the government's commitment to implementing the recommendations of the chief medical officer, Liam Donaldson following the discovery - highlighted in particular in the Bristol and Liverpool inquiries - that organs and tissue have often been removed, stored, or used without consent. The consultation also seeks views on removal of organs or tissues from living people. The law here is also out of date and in need of major overhaul.
