ViaCell to expand research to develop new treatment options for diabetes

ViaCell, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on the development of cellular therapies, in conjunction with its ViaCell Endocrine Science subsidiary, will expand research to assess and measure the effectiveness of both adult pancreatic islet-derived and umbilical cord blood stem cells in the treatment of diabetes.

The company's action follows the recent announcement that researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have discovered that a naturally occurring intestinal hormone, known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), appears to prompt stem cells to differentiate into insulin producing cells.
