"Tolerance-based stem cell transplantation using sublethal conditioning is being considered for the treatment of human disease, but safety and efficacy remain to be established," according to Daron Forman and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester.
Animals treated with costimulatory blockade were capable of successful engraftment, but viral infection at the time of transplant had catastophic effects, Forman and coauthors found.
