Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 marks post-transplant, veno-occlusive disease

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in South Korea have identified several markers for a dangerous liver condition in bone marrow transplantation (BMT) patients.

Je-Hwan Lee and colleagues at the University of Ulsan and Changbuk National University in Seoul investigated the diagnostic and prognostic signs of hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) after marrow transplants.

A number of clinical variables proved useful for finding VOD and predicting its outcome, with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels especially valuable in this regard, Lee and coauthors said.
