Double graft purging raises efficacy, risk

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Double purging of hematopoietic stem cell grafts increases their efficacy but also heightens the risk of life-threatening complications, according to researchers in Spain.

"We used a "positive" (CD34) and "negative" (CD19) double-selection method to improve the efficacy of "single purging" of hematopoietic harvests in poor-prognosis lymphoproliferative disorders," explained Albert Altes and colleagues at the University of Barcelona and Hospital Duran i Reynals in Barcelona.

Patients treated with double-purged grafts had lower relapse risk although they were more likely to suffer from severe post-transplant...
