Roche accelerates effort to develop blood screening assay

In response to a recent challenge by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop effective nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) to screen blood donations for the West Nile virus, Roche Molecular Diagnostics (RMD) has implemented plans to accelerate research and product development efforts to create a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the West Nile virus.

Speaking at a breakout session of the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Blood Banks, RMD representatives said they had formed a dedicated product development team and initiated efforts to produce a solution to screen blood...
