Immune transfer through stem cell transplantation effective

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Researchers in Germany have identified a novel method of inducing immunity to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

"Previous data indicate that a transfer of specific humoral and cellular immunity by way of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) should, in principle, be possible," explained Monika Lindemann and colleagues at the University of Essen and Georg-August University in Goettingen.

Recipients of stem cell grafts from vaccinated donors demonstrated HBV-specific immune responses after transplantation, Lindemann and coauthors confirmed.
