High-dose acyclovir may reduce cytomegalovirus infection risk

High-dose prophylactic treatment with acyclovir may reduce the cytomegalovirus infection risk in stem cell transplant recipients.

"To establish the incidence of CMV viremia after allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation," researchers in the United States performed a study involving "51 consecutive allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplant recipients."

"A total of 12 recipients were at moderate risk for CMV disease," while 39 patients "were at high risk," noted A. Verma and coauthors at the University of Chicago.

"Conditioning regimens varied, but GvHD [graft-versus-host disease] prophylaxis consisted of tacrolimus...
