Rituximab impairs mobilization and engraftment

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - The anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody rituximab impairs peripheral blood stem cell mobilization and engraftment, researchers in New York warn.

"Rituximab is used for in vivo tumor cell purging for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients prior to autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT)," explained M. Benekli and colleagues at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.

Treatment with rituximab was associated with low PBSC yields and delayed engraftment, although its antitumor efficacy resulted in longer overall survival, Benekli and coauthors found.
