Hemoglobin causes malignant cells to release matrix metalloproteinase-9.

According to recent research published in the journal Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis, "matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) plays a crucial role in both angiogenesis and tumor invasion. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been shown to upregulate the expression of MMP-9 in vascular smooth muscle cells. We recently reported that hemoglobin (Hb) enhances the expression of tissue factor (TF) and VEGF on TF-positive human malignant cells."
