A genetic method of determining ABO blood type can be run at same time as HLA

A method for screening for ABO blood group antigens genetically, by PCR-SSP on cadaveric donors, can be run at the same time as HLA typing.

According to recent research published in the European Journal of Immunogenetics, "The ABO blood group antigens are carbohydrate molecules synthesized by the glycosyltransferases encoded by the ABO gene on chromosome 9. Kidney transplantation across the ABO barrier generally leads to rapid humoral graft rejection due to the presence of naturally occurring antibodies to the A and B antigens.
