Unusual leukemia caused by rare combination of genes

Two children who developed leukemia after receiving gene therapy for an inherited disease may have been victims of a rare combination of genes that is unlikely to happen in gene therapy for other disorders, a study said.

Researchers at the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland, discovered that a gene in a virus used to treat the children, who had an inherited immune system disorder, can combine with another gene to cause leukemia in mice.
