The Red Cross in Central Oregon has only a day's worth of some blood types on hand, a shortage caused by fewer donors.

Michael Mawdsley, donor services manager for Central and Eastern Oregon, said the shortage hasn't yet affected hospitals in the Pacific Northwest region of the American Red Cross, which includes Oregon, Alaska, Washington and Idaho.

"Right now the hospitals are getting what they order," Mawdsley told The Bend Bulletin. "But we are trying to prevent any kind of alert status from happening ... which means we may not be able to fulfill all their needs."
