According to recent research published in the journal Physical Therapy, "Approximately 282,000 adults, adolescents, and children are currently living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the United States as of the year 2002.
"With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the life span of these individuals has dramatically increased, and HIV infection is now considered a chronic illness with accompanying episodes of exacerbations and remissions of symptoms."
