Georgia congressman has lung transplant surgery

U.S. Representative Charlie Norwood, who for more than 6 years has suffered a breathing disorder, underwent a lung transplant October 5, 2004, that doctors said was necessary to save his life.

The surgery took place in Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia, and lasted 31/2 hours, said his spokesman, Duke Hipp. Norwood was listed in critical condition, which is standard for such procedures, and is expected to be hospitalized for 2 to 3 weeks and likely won't resume congressional duties for about 3 months.
