TSEs are fatal brain diseases that include BSE or "mad cow disease" in cattle, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans, and "scrapie" in sheep. Abnormal prion proteins are thought to be essential and may be sufficient to transmit TSE diseases.
