A two-level approach ensures the safety of volunteer blood donations.

According to a report from the United States, "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires blood-testing laboratories to perform licensed screening assays to ensure the safety of the volunteer blood supply. During the last 20 to 30 years there has been significant reductions in the risk of transfusion transmissible infectious diseases. The improvement in blood safety is a result of manufacturers' enhancements in assay screening kits and the implementation of nucleic acid testing."
