Separate intravenous access recommended for fat emulsion infusion in neonates

Fat emulsion delivery through separate intravenous access produces optimal results in neonates undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

In a "prospective, randomized, open-label trial," pharmacologists in the United States sought to "characterize the effects of infusing fat emulsion" during neonatal ECMO "by comparing results from patients receiving fat emulsion through the ECMO circuit with those receiving fat emulsion through separate intravenous access."
