SHV-type ESBLs confer cefepime resistance in one-third of Enterobacter cloacae isolates

One-third of clinical Enterobacter cloacae isolates produce enzymes that strongly limit cefepime efficacy. "Cefepime is a potentially useful antibiotic" for the treatment of E. cloacae infections, physicians in the United States explained. "However, in our institution the MIC for E. cloacae bloodstream isolates is 1.6 microg/mL," noted D. Szabo and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
