Use of off-pump CPB reduces transient hepatocellular damage

The use of off-pump cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) reduces transient hepatocellular damage in heart surgery patients.

CPB "affects hepatocellular integrity and occasionally results in liver dysfunction after cardiac surgery," anesthesiologists in Japan explained.

"Performing coronary artery bypass graft surgery without CPB may help to reduce the risk of this complication and better preserve perioperative liver function," argued T. Yamada and colleagues at Keio University. In a "prospective study," they "compared perioperative hepatocellular damage in patients undergoing on-pump and off-pump bypass surgery."
