Knee replacement postoperative unwashed shed blood use does not alter immunosuppression

The use of unwashed shed blood (USB) after total knee arthroplasty does not significantly alter postoperative immune function.

"Allogeneic or autologous blood seems to have an immunosuppressive effect that is largely attributable to storage-dependent factors," anesthesiologists in Spain noted.

"However, transfusion of postoperative unwashed shed blood (USB) after elective total knee replacement does not undergo storage," noted M. Munoz and colleagues at the University of Malaga School of Medicine, who "explored the effects of USB on the mitogen-driven cytokine synthesis by the patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells."
