p16INK4 overexpression is a reliable marker of human papillomavirus-induced oral high-grade squamous dysplasia. According to a recently published report from the United States, "Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been implicated in the development of high-grade squamous dysplasia and carcinoma of the oral cavity in the absence of other known risk factors such as smoking.
