Long-term blood flow velocity reduction may increase retinal thickness of the macula and may play a key role in diabetic macular edema development. In a recent article published in the journal Ophthalmology, scientists in Japan conducted a study "to investigate the relationship between blood flow velocity in perifoveal capillaries and retinal thickness at the central fovea in diabetic patients with clinically significant macular edema to elucidate the pathogenesis of diabetic macular edema."
