Study data from University Children's Hospital, Department of General Pediatrics update knowledge of stem cell research

A report, 'Liver, liver cell and stem cell transplantation for the treatment of urea cycle defects,' is newly published data in Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. "Despite advances in pharmacological therapy of urea cycle disorders (UCDs), the overall long-term prognosis is poor, especially for neonatal manifestations. Transplantation of liver tissue or isolated cells appears suitable for transfer of the missing enzyme," scientists in Heidelberg, Germany report.
"Liver transplantation (LT) for UCDs has an excellent 5-year survival rate of approximately 90% and is the only way to completely cure the disease. However, major neurological damage can only be prevented...
