Use of Interferon Beta as an Anticancer Agent Shows Promise

Research suggests that the effects of interferons on cell proliferation and differentiation may make them useable as antineoplastic agents.

Pennsylvanian researchers Anna Lokshin et al. investigated the mechanism of interferon beta (IFN(beta)) on squamous differentiation and/or programmed cell death in cultured non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ("Mechanism of Interferon Beta-Induced Squamous Differentiation and Programmed Cell Death in Human Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Lines," Journal of the National Cancer Institute, February 1, 1995, 87(3):206-12).
