Laparoscopic Colon Cancer Surgery Working Well

New laparoscopic operating techniques appear to work just as well as conventional open surgery for removal of cancerous portions of a diseased colon, with faster recovery and cosmetic advantages, researchers report.

Results of these findings were reported at the 94th annual convention of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, May 7-12, 1995.

In laparoscopic surgery, an instrument containing a tiny video camera is inserted into the abdomen through a long hollow tube. The surgeon views the surgical site on a video screen and performs the operation using specially designed instruments also inserted...
