Study Outlines Hazards of Indoor Tanning

Suntanning, and especially indoor tanning, has only negative health consequences, whether they are short-term effects like redness, dryness, and itching, or long-term ones like wrinkles, sagging, and skin cancers, according to a just-released study appearing in the August 1995 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD).

The article, by James M. Spencer, M.D., M.S., of the University of Miami, and Rex A. Amonette, M.D., of the University of Tennessee in Memphis, details the short and long-term effects seen among patients who patronize indoor tanning facilities or use similar lights and equipment in their homes.
