"The Expression of Galectin-3, an Animal Lectin, is Upregulated in Hepatocellular Carcinomas Associated with the Hepatitis B Virus."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Clinical Research Meeting, held May 5-8, 1995, in San Diego, California, "Galectin-3, an animal lectin with (beta)-galactoside specificity, is located in the nucleus, cytoplasm and extracellularly and is associated with physiological processes such as cell growth and RNA processing. This lectin was also demonstrated to confer metastatic properties to a non invasive tumor line, and the levels of expression of galectin-3 are modulated in many tumors with higher incidences of metastases. We have demonstrated that levels of galectin-3, usually expressed at low levels in normal lymphocytes, were highly elevated in cells productively...
