Patent Issued For Technique To Find Genetic Abnormalities in Cells

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) on September 5, 1995, issued a broad patent to the University of California (UC) for the invention of a technique that is widely used in research to find genetic abnormalities in cells.

The technique can be applied to the detection of abnormalities that are common in human diseases, and commercial products employing the technique are already on the market.

The technique simplifies the detection of missing, extra or abnormally rearranged genes in individual cells, as well as the identification of missing or extra pieces of chromosomes. Such additions and deletions of genes or chromosomes are commonly present...
