HCC Screening among HBV Carriers May Be of Limited Benefit

The incidence and prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in hepatitis B carriers in North America urban areas may be as high as in countries endemic for hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Morris Sherman, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues, the Toronto Hospital, and the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, said they found such incidence and prevalence among patients in the greater Toronto area to be similar to that of patients in endemic areas ("Screening for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Chronic Carriers of Hepatitis B Virus: Incidence and Prevalence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a North American Urban Population," Hepatology, August 1995;22(2):432-438).
