According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, held October 8-11, 1995, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Purpose/Objective: As an alternative to gene transfer techniques for genetic manipulation and gene therapy, we have investigated the use of triple helix-forming oligonucleotides to target mutations to selected genes within mammalian cells. The ability to selectively mutate and inactivate specific genes in mammalian cells would be a valuable research tool to probe critical pathways associated with cancer and other diseases.
