According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, held August 20-23, 1995, in Copenhagen, Denmark, "The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been increasing in Egypt over the last 10 years. Epidemiological studies have identified several risk factors for HCC, including chronic hepatitis B and C virus infection, exposure to dietary aflatoxins and cirrhosis. The p53 gene is a tumour suppressor gene which is mutated and inactivated in many malignancies including HCC. The abnormal gene product can be detected immunohistochemically.
