Previous research has focused on the transfection of the MDR1 gene into bone marrow (BM) cells to protect them against the cytotoxic effects of anticancer chemotherapy. The MDR1 gene, which encodes the P-glycoprotein multidrug transporter, confers resistance to a wide variety of agents including etoposide, taxol, and anthracycline antibiotics.
