Pectin Non-Toxic Compound May Inhibit Spread of Cancer

Hercules Inc., Wilmington, Delaware, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate with cancer researchers at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute of Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, Detroit. The work involves developing a modified form of citrus pectin that can be taken orally to stop the spread of prostate and other cancers. In March 1995, Avraham Raz, Ph.D., of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, and Kenneth J. Pienta, M.D. of the University of Michigan, reported that modified pectin may prevent the spread of prostate cancer (Journal of the National Cancer Institute).
