Scientists Discover Molecule Which Triggers Cell Death

November 20th, 1995

Researchers at Apoptosis Technology, Inc. (ATI), working with collaborators at St. Louis University Medical Center, Missouri, have discovered a new protein which promotes apoptosis.

Their findings have been published in the November 3, 1995, issue of Oncogene (11:1921-1928, 1995).

The publication describes the cloning and analysis of this newly discovered protein, Bik (Bcl-2 interacting killer). It interacts with a group of cellular and viral proteins - the Bcl-2 family - which are known to regulate apoptosis in a wide variety of cell types.
