Stockpiles of Anti-Cancer Chemical Lacking

Sixteen years after the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear accident unleashed a frantic, midnight search for a badly needed radiation-blocking chemical, the government has yet to stockpile the drug in case of another mishap. A presidential commission that investigated the 1979 accident near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, recommended potassium iodide be stored near commercial nuclear power plants as a protection against cancer of the thyroid gland, which is particularly susceptible to radiation.
